Bill & Ted? The Matrix? What year is it?! It’s 2020! This year is starting to sound a lot like 2017 when Jumanji announced a new movie after 22 years. While we have a lot of remakes and sequels coming that are based on older movies, there’s a lot of new stuff to look forward to in 2020.
One movie we’re super excited about is a new Ghostbusters (not a sequel to 2016, but a sequel to the original series). The newer one has some reprising roles and Paul Rudd. Personally, I’ll watch anything with Paul Rudd in it just because he’s one of the best actors of our time.
Then, we have Bill & Ted, as mentioned above, along with new horror movies that will probably scare the pants off us. What we’re saying is that the year 2020 is going to have some serious hits. I haven’t been this excited for a movie lineup since the Avengers came out!
Bill & Ted Face the Music
Release date: August 21st, 2020
Gotta admit that I didn’t see this one coming. With Keanu’s recent popularity, there’s going to be a new Bill & Ted and Matrix movie, although the latter won’t release until 2021 at the earliest. The new Bill & Ted film will still feature Reeves and Winter reprising their roles as they try to create a song that’s supposed to save all life on Earth. Whoa.
Wonder Woman 1984
Release date: June 5th, 2020
Don’t be fooled by the title. This Wonder Woman movie is the sequel to the 2017 film that blew everyone away. Set in the ’80s, Diana Prince has to fight the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Wonder Woman 1984 will also introduce Cheetah, a supervillainess with super speed and strength (among other powers).
Candyman
Release date: June 12th, 2020
Candyman is still one of the best horror movies released during the ’90s. Now, Jordan Peele reigns supreme as the recent horror master. Combine those two, and you have a winning combination. After Us and Get Out, Jordan Peele’s Candyman is undoubtedly going to be just as terrifyingly good. Who knew this comedian had it in him?
Godzilla vs. King Kong
Release date: March 13th, 2020
Even I have to admit that the King Kong and Godzilla movies were a lot better than expected, so this one has me psyched. Audiences have been waiting for these two to square up for a while. Now, we’ll finally get to see them in the battle for the ages. Will they wipe out each other or will a victor remain?
Birds of Prey
Release date: February 7th, 2020
Harley Quinn was one of the best things to come out of Suicide Squad, so they had to make more movies with her. The first will be Birds of Prey. Harley joins Black Canary and Huntress to save a girl from Black Mask. It’ll star Margot Robbie (of course), Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, and Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary. Ewan McGregor will play Black Mask.
Mulan
Release date: March 27th, 2020
Disney’s live-action movies have been the talk-of-the-town, but Mulan is surely going to be one of the best ones to release yet. Finally, we’ll see Mulan save China, but what will they do about Mushu? They have to add him. If they don’t, Disney, dishonor on them, dishonor on their family, dishonor on their cow.
Soul
Release date: June 19th, 2020
Any Pixar release gets me excited. This one is about an adventure through New York City and “cosmic realms.” I’m not really sure what that means right now, but Soul is apparently going to answer life’s most important questions. The voice actors include Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Phylicia Rashad, and Daveed Diggs. The art looks fantastic already!
Black Widow
Release date: May 1st, 2020
Finally! A Black Widow movie! I’ve been waiting on this one for ages. Instead of a sequel to Endgame (obviously), Black Widow is going to be about how she became the hero we know and love. Get ready for some action and some pretty saddening scenes that are sure to break your heart. After all, she went through a lot of toil to be who she was in the Avengers.
The King's Man
Release date: February 12th, 2020
The Kingsman is a fun action series, but we’re left with one question: where did all this start? Well, The King’s Man is going to tell that story. This film is about the origins of the secret organization that’s designed to stop evil masterminds and save the world. The trailers already look action-packed and much better than the last Kingsman film that came out.
Eternals
Release date: November 6th, 2020
It’s time to move onto Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The first stop? Eternals. They’re a group of near-immortal aliens with powers like atomic manipulation, super-speed, super-strength, and so on. With the Avengers gone, the Eternals have some big shoes to fill, but I believe in them.
The Voyage of Dr. Dolittle
Release date: January 17th, 2020
Now that Robert Downey Jr. is free from Marvel, he can star in new films. The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle will be the first, and it looks like it’ll be amazing. Also starring Tom Holland (Spiderman) and Ralph Fiennes, the film follows the usual plotline of a doctor who can talk to animals. The only difference is, this one looks super quirky—typical of RDJ.
Onward
Release date: March 6th, 2020
Onward is a new Disney/Pixar film about two Elvish brothers who go on a journey to see if magic still exists in the world. Why? They want to spend one last day with their father, who died when they were both too young to remember him. Disney is pretty good about making us ugly sob at the beginning of the movie, aren’t they?
Ghostbusters
Release date: July 10th, 2020
Ghostbusters 2020 will serve as a direct sequel to the ’80s movies and will have no connection to the 2016 reboot. This one is directed by Jason Reitman (director of Thank You For Smoking and Juno) and will have a cast consisting of Paul Rudd, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and possibly Bill Murray—the last one is rumored, but I’m crossing my fingers.
No Time to Die: Bond 25
Release date: April 8th, 2020
No Time to Die made headlines when Daniel Craig stated this would be his last outing as Bond. Other than Craig, the movie has a pretty dang good cast including Rami Malek, Ralph Fiennes, and Naomi Harris. Unfortunately, Lea Seydoux is also returning despite the fact she’s one of the dullest Bond girls to date.
Bad Boys for Life
Release date: January 17th, 2020
Bad Boys 2 came out in 2003, so no one saw this one coming. Still, fans are pretty excited, especially since Will Smith and Martin Freeman are reprising their roles. This one is about taking down the Miami drug cartel. In addition to Bad Boys for Life, Bad Boys 4 is also on the docket, but there’s no release date yet.
The New Mutants
Release date: April 3rd, 2020
When Disney purchased Fox, X-Men went along with it. After the failures of the recent X-Men films (The Dark Phoenix being one of them), Disney put Kevin Feige in charge of fixing X-Men. What we know is that the release date has been pushed back three times, so I’m hoping that Disney is taking this chance to take a hard look at The New Mutants. It’ll be hard to repair the series after two major disappointments in a row.
The Conjuring 3
Release date: September 11th, 2020
The Conjuring series is easily one of the best modern horror movies you could watch, even though La Llorona wasn’t a huge hit, this one will be—fans didn’t know La Llorona was part of the series. The new film will follow a guy who was put on trial for committing murder, claiming he was possessed as an excuse.
Dune
Release date: December 18th, 2020
The announcement of a Dune remake got fans super excited, and it’s shaping up pretty nicely. The cast includes Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, and so many more huge stars that I can’t list them all. The director is the same guy that did Blade Runner 2049, so it’s safe to say this one is going to be super good.
Uncharted
Release date: December 18th, 2020
I want to say the Uncharted movie had a rocky start, but the truth is that the whole thing has been rough. For over a decade, the movie has lost writers and directors, which leaves people wondering what’s going on. Regardless, this movie has a December 18th release date. Will it be another Suicide Squad situation? Possibly. Let’s hope not.
The Gentleman
Release date: January 24th, 2020
Count me in for any Guy Ritchie movie. This one is about a British drug lord that tries to sell off his empire to a dynasty of Oklahoma billionaires. The cast is pretty star-studded with Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, and Colin Farrell, so it’s bound to be good. Still, I’m waiting on Sherlock Holmes 3 since Robert Downey Jr. is free from Marvel. Where is it, Ritchie?
