Is there another type of clothing that’s more professional and just all-around badass than a suit? Nope. Next question.
You know what’s not badass, though? Wearing your suit the wrong way. Suit trends have evolved a lot over the years, and they will continue to evolve in the future. There are just some things about suits that have changed since your dad or grandpa was rocking one.
Don’t be behind on the times. Let us help you avoid these common suit mistakes.
Letting Your White Undershirt Ride Above the Dress Shirt
This just looks sloppy. It always has, no matter what decade we’re in. Pull that thing down and button up.
Not Getting Your Jacket Sleeves Hemmed
Almost everyone knows that pants need to be hemmed. But many people think that they’re the only thing that need attention. That’s not true, though. It’s critical to make sure your sleeves are the correct length as well. If they’re too long, it makes you look like you’re a child wearing a suit for the first time. If they’re too small, well, that’s got more of a Chris Farley vibe to it.
Your Pants and Jacket Are Too Baggy
This might’ve been acceptable 15 or 20 years ago, but it’s not anymore. These days, most men wear slim-fit suits. If you want to look professional and put-together, you’ll make sure you’ve got a sharply tailored suit.
The Suit is Too Small
On a similar note, don’t get a suit that’s too tight and short. You’ll look absolutely ridiculous. It’s just as messy as a baggy suit. If you’re going to invest in something this fancy, make sure it’s properly tailored. Most stores can help you with things like that, or at least can point you in the right direction.
Wearing Goofy Ties or Socks
You might be a light-hearted and funny guy, but trust us, those rubber ducks on your tie or those hot pink socks are not making you look good. Potential employers will take one look at that and think you’re not taking them seriously.
Wearing Athletic Socks With a Suit
Come on, really? This is actually a pretty common mistake, but that doesn’t make it any less sloppy. You need to wear dress socks that coordinate with your suit—always.
Not Matching Your Dress Shoes
This is a common mistake as well, but it’s a little more understandable—color coordination is hard, yo. However, small details like this go a long way towards making you look snazzy.
Buttoning Every Button on Your Suit Jacket
You look very stiff and uncomfortable if you do this. It’s always best to just button the middle button.
Over-Accessorizing
When wearing a suit, stick with a pocket square, a watch, and a ring. Unless you’re a mob boss, in which case 50 gold necklaces is also acceptable, keep your accessories to a minimum.
Wearing a Ridiculous Belt
Save the braided leather belt with the giant buckle for the rodeo. When wearing a suit, there’s no reason to draw attention to your crotch. Stick with a simple black or brown belt and leave it at that.
